LA PRUEBA DEL DESIERTO
La Iglesia inicia hoy la preparación intensiva a la semana más santa de todo el año litúrgico y nos ayuda a revivir los misterios centrales de nuestra fe. Por ello nos invita a unirnos durante los cuarenta días de Cuaresma, al misterio de Jesús en el desierto para acrecentar en nuestro corazón el deseo ferviente de vivir esos días santos de nuestra Redención acompañando muy de cerca a Cristo
Hermanas y hermanos:
1. Sólo podemos celebrar la Pascua con Cristo si nos dejamos purificar por Él y nos reconciliamos con Dios. Él quiere curar nuestros males, nos quiere comunicar la energía y la vida nueva de Cristo Jesús. Quiere renovar su Alianza con nosotros. Nos tiende una vez más su mano. Dejémonos convencer y aceptemos esa mano amiga. Miremos el ejemplo de ese Cristo que empieza su camino, cargado de dificultades y también de tentaciones, hasta llegar hasta la obediencia total de la Cruz y luego la alegría de la Pascua.
2. El desierto, más allá de una localización geográfica o temporal, es un lugar teológico en que uno se ve forzado a enfrentarse con su propia verdad en total desnudez. El desierto puede ser un lugar apartado y solitario (una casa de ejercicios), un tiempo reservado (día de retiro); o puede ser la vida ajetreada de la ciudad donde la persona se pierde en la muchedumbre. Desierto teológico, que cuenta con la presencia de alimañas o mensajeros de Dios.
3. La tentación de Jesús, y las nuestras, no consisten solamente en elegir entre el bien y el mal, sino en saber escoger los medios. ¿Cómo llegaremos a ser creyentes de verdad? Luchando como Jesús contra los ídolos que nos conducen a la muerte. Cualquier cosa, persona o ideología que ocupe el lugar de Dios, que arrastre al hombre al vacío y rompa la comunión y el amor es un ídolo.
La vida del hombre sobre la tierra será siempre un combate contra la tentación y un esfuerzo continuo por convertirse. Esto supone luchar contra el orgullo, contra las preocupaciones paganas y contra la sexualidad anárquica. Dice San Agustín: "Si en él fuimos tentados, en él venceremos al diablo. ¿Te fijas en que Cristo fue tentado, y no te fijas en que venció la tentación? Reconócete a ti mismo tentado en él, y reconócete también a ti mismo victorioso en él.
Revivamos las sanas tradiciones de la cuaresma como la meditación de la Pasión y Muerte del Señor, el rezo del vía crucis o la lectura del Evangelio sobre la Pasión. Conservemos un ambiente de reparación, vivamos con profundidad la Semana Santa; y no olvidemos los pequeños sacrificios para ayudar a los misioneros, el ahorro, y la caridad generosa hacia los más necesitados. Que así sea.
First Sunday of Lent, Year B
THE TRIAL IN THE DESERT
The Church begins today with the intense preparation for the holiest week of the liturgical year, and helps us to revive the central mysteries of our faith. For this reason, we are invited to gather in these forty days of Lent around the mystery of Jesus in the desert so we can strengthen in our hearts the desire to live these holy days of our redemption very close to Christ.
Brothers and Sisters:
1. We can only celebrate Passover with Christ if we let Him purify us and we reconcile ourselves with God. He wants to heal our illnesses, He wants to transfer to us the energy of the new life in Jesus Christ. He wants to renew the covenant with us. He gives us his hand. Again, let us be convinced and accept his friendly hand. Let´s look at the example of Christ and follow his path all the way until we reach total obedience of the Cross and then the happiness of Passover.
2. The desert, more than a geographical or temporal location, it is a theological place where one is forced to confront the bare truth. This desert can be an isolated place (a Retreat Home), a reserved time (a day of Retreat) or it can be the hectic city life where a person gets lost amongst the crowd. The theological desert can account for much evil as well as messengers of God.
3. The temptations of Christ, and ours, are not just about choosing right from wrong, but in knowing how to choose the means. How can we become true believers? Fighting, like Jesus, against idols that drive us only to death. Any thing, person, or ideology that takes God´s place... and drags man to emptiness, breaking his communion with love, is an idol.
The life of man on Earth will always be a fight against temptation and a continuous effort to conversion. This means to fight against pride, against the pagan preoccupations and against disorderly sexuality. St Augustine says, "If in Him we were tempted, in Him we will win over the devil. You see that Christ was tempted and you don´t notice that he conquered temptation? Recognize yourself tempted in Him, and recognized yourself also, victorious in Him".
Let´s revive Lent´s traditions such as the Meditation of the passion and death of our Lord, Praying the Stations of the Cross, or reading the Passion in the Gospel. Let´s maintain an environment of penitence and live Holy Week with trascendent depth without forgetting the small sacrifices we can do to help missionaries and the generous charity to help the neediest. Amen.
