Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)

Estamos acostumbrados a aplicarla a Jesús.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

LIKE SALT, LIKE LIGHT

Why be a Christian in today’s world? The Gospel answers this question with  two images. A Christian is called to be salt and give flavor to life. A Christian is called to be light and with the witness of this light, to enable the world to see reality with clarity and to walk the correct path.

Brothers and sisters:

1. What purpose does salt have in our daily lives? Salt purifies, gives taste, preserves the perishable, salt gives greater value. This is the way a Christian, through his actions and witness of the Gospel gives flavor to humanity. The Christian is capable of preserving humankind with his characteristics, qualities, values, his capacity to love, of living in communion with other people, his capacity of relating with God Father.  He helps to keep man free from corruption, such us: dehumanization, consumerism, and the countless forms of slavery that exists in our day, violence, and hedonism.

2. The Christian is called to give joy, hope and meaning to life. He gives reasons to face difficulties with hope, to overcome troubles, to not give into depression or sadness; he gives reasons to fight for the poor, to defend the miserable, even to give his own life if need be. This is what yeast does in dough.

3. Salt is important, but light is even more important. Without light life would be impossible. The light allows us to see things as they really are and to walk in the right direction. Faith in in the Risen Christ is the light that gives the answer to man’s uncertainties and questions.  We usually apply this term of “light” to our Blessed Lord. He himself said: “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall never walk in darkness”. However, in this text, we are told that we are the light of the world. We prolong the action of Jesus when we give witness to Him.

4. Light dissipates darkness, light warms where it shines and highlights what it enlightens. All this is done in high speed.  If we want to find our way in the middle of darkness, we turn on a light. At dawn, everything seems to come to life again, everything seems to begin its daily course.  We also cry out for a glimpse of light when we are going through troubles and difficulties; we begin to see the light as soon as the darkness of our problems begins to lift.  Light begins to be the image of what is good, of what is life, of what is positive.

Brothers and sisters:

When our Lord says that we are the The light of the world, He calls us to be the life and the solution to today’s problems.  Let us be the light of the world so that we can fight darkness, be it the darkness generated by sin and evil or that caused by ignorance or prejudice. The Christian is a being that reflects the shines from on High.  A being that brightens up the world with the light of Christ.
