"Y TÚ ¿QUIÉN ERES?

El hombre moderno pone en tela de juicio muchas seguridades. Todo lo relativiza. Vive en la desconfianza de que pueda haber "una verdad, un camino" por el que valga la pena arriesgarse. Es lo mismo que le ocurrió a Tomás, pero Jesús le dio la respuesta más clara: "Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida". Cristo es el camino; gracias a él tenemos la puerta abierta para vivir en Dios.

Hermanas y hermanos:

1.  "Soy el camino": Lo acabamos de escuchar en el evangelio: "Yo soy el camino, y la verdad, y la vida. Nadie va al Padre sino por mí". Jesús se nos presenta como aquel que da sentido pleno a la existencia, como el que es capaz de satisfacer nuestro deseo de felicidad, de gozo, de vida plena. Siguiéndole a él todos los valores y las esperanzas e ilusiones humanas se hacen más plenas; todos los esfuerzos que hacemos los hombres al servicio de una vida mejor pueden llegar más a fondo, pueden alcanzar una amplitud insospechada. Reconociendo a Jesús como el camino ¿habrá quien no encuentre la ruta hacia el Padre? Sabiendo que es la verdad ¿habrá quien la busque en otros o en las cosas? Teniéndolo como la vida ¿habrá quien deje a la muerte la última palabra?

2.  "Soy la verdad": Jesús es la Verdad que debemos conocer. Dios se ha hecho palabra nuestra; ha venido tan cerca que podemos escuchar perfectamente los latidos de su corazón. Jesús es verdaderamente el rostro de Dios. Todos quieren tener razón y la mayoría cree que la tiene, pero la verdad es única. ¿Cómo podemos conocerla? ¿Dónde encontrarla? Jesús responde de forma sorprendente, diciendo que él es la verdad. La pregunta ¿qué es la verdad? tiene ahora una respuesta decisiva y única: "Yo soy la verdad". El instinto más arraigado en el hombre es vivir; es el ideal  por el que más gustosamente da el hombre su vida: por vivir de una manera digna. Por eso también nos asegura:

3.  "Soy la vida": Entre los diversos estilos de vida que los hombres tienen de vivir ¿cómo dar con la forma más real, digna e intensa? Jesús responde también a este interrogante y, como siempre, lo hace de forma existencial, personal. Jesús nos asegura que él es la vida. Un ídolo nunca puede ser un buen camino, ni una buena verdad, ni una buena vida, sino una alienación. Jesús nos manifiesta la realidad de Dios: "Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida". Como camino nos lleva al Padre; como verdad nos da una razón para luchar; como vida nos prepara una morada eterna. Nuestra existencia, pobre y débil, se ha visto transformada por su presencia de una manera milagrosa.

Verdaderamente, vale la pena arriesgarse y decir con toda nuestra fe: ¡Me la juego por Cristo! Porque en definitiva es el único que en veinte siglos de historia no ha fallado a nadie sino todo lo contrario, es el único que ha cambiado el mundo.

Fifth Week of Easter (Year A)                                                 

So who are you?

Modern man jeopardizes many securities. He considers everything relative, he is a skeptic who doesn't trust that there could be "a truth, a way" that it's worth running a risk for. It's the same thing that happened to Thomas, but Christ gave him the clearest answer possible: "I am the way, the truth, and the life". Christ is the way, thanks to him we have the chance to live in God.

Sisters and Brothers:

1.  I am the Way: We have just heard in the Gospel: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". Jesus presents himself to us as the one who can give full meaning to our existence, as the one who is able to satisfy our desire for happiness, for joy, for true life. Following him all the values and hopes and aspirations of man become richer; all of our efforts for a better life are worthwhile, because they reach deeper, they accomplish the unexpected. Recognizing Jesus as the Way, could anyone lose the path to the Father? Knowing that he is the truth; would anyone seek the truth in others, or in mere creatures? Having life in him, would death have the final word in our lives?

2.  I am the Truth: Jesus is the truth that we should come to know. God has made himself our word, has come so close that we can hear perfectly his very heartbeat. Jesus is the true face of God. It's human to want to be right, and most people consider that they are, but there is only one truth. How can we know it? Where can we find it? Jesus answers this interrogative in a surprising way, saying he is the truth. The question "what is truth?" now has one decisive answer: "I am the truth".

The strongest instinct in man is survival, to live; and in another sense it's the ideal man most willingly dedicates his life to: to live with dignity. For this reason Jesus also assures us:

3.  I am the Life: Among the diverse lifestyles that people follow, how can we find one that's more real, more worthy, more intense? Jesus answers this question as well, once again in an existential, personal way. Jesus assures us that he is the life. An idol can never be a good way, or a good truth, or a good life; rather it would be a mere distraction. Jesus reveals the reality of God: "I am the way, the truth, and the life". A way that brings us to the Father, a truth that gives us a reason to struggle, a life that prepares us for our eternal home. Our poor and weak existence is transformed by his presence in a marvelous way.

Truly, it is worth the risk to say with all our faith: I will gamble it for Christ! Because He is definitively the only person who in his twenty century long history hasn't failed anyone, but, on the contrary, has changed the world.
