¿QUIEN SOY YO PARA TI?
Lc.9,18-24: “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?
La confesión de fe de Pedro y la invitación de Jesús de seguirlo por el camino de la cruz define el estilo de lo que debe ser la fe del cristiano entendida como seguimiento de Cristo y como comunión con el misterio pascual. Este encuentro con Cristo deberá llevarnos a la confesión de fe: “Tú eres el Mesías de Dios”.
Hermanas y hermanos:
1. Jesús interroga a los discípulos: “¿Vosotros quién decís que soy Yo?” Esa pregunta la repite a cada uno de nosotros: “¿Quién soy Yo para ti?”. ¿Un hombre grande e interesante? ¿Un personaje justo y defensor de la verdad? ¿Un profeta incómodo? ¿Una persona fuera de todo esquema? La respuesta de los discípulos fue veloz y tajante ¡Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios vivo! Y esa respuesta ha sostenido por siglos nuestra fe. Sabemos bien que el cristianismo, antes que ser una doctrina, es una Persona. Es Cristo.
2. El Evangelio de hoy nos describe la experiencia culminante de los apóstoles. Es el momento del descubrimiento. ¿Queremos profundizar en su conocimiento y madurar en su amor? Recorramos las páginas del Evangelio y lentamente se irá desvelando el misterio de su persona. Así también fue apareciendo a los ojos de los Apóstoles un Cristo siempre nuevo:
Cuando da la vista a un ciego o sana al leproso, cuando multiplica los panes o aplaca la tempestad, cuando resucita a Lázaro o transforma el agua en vino, cuando lee las intenciones de los corazones o cuando muestra su indignación ante la profanación del templo, cuando formula paradojas que llama bienaventuranzas o cuando narra parábolas como la del hijo pródigo, el buen samaritano, la oveja perdida, cuando se transfigura en el Tabor o gime en Getsemaní o muere en la cruz. La Pascua será el paso decisivo hacia una plena comprensión de su persona.
3. Este descubrimiento de Cristo ha de ser personal e intransferible. Cada uno debe recorrer todas las etapas del largo camino que recorrieron los apóstoles. Sabemos que para seguir a Cristo es necesario sufrir y confesar su nombre en el dolor. La vida del hombre lleva necesariamente sus cruces y sus alegrías. Cristo, sin embargo, nos da una visión nueva: morir para vivir, perder la vida en el mundo para ganarla en la eternidad.
Hermanas y hermanos: El primer testimonio del cristiano y su primer compromiso es aceptar la Voluntad de Dios pues sólo el que ha experimentado las paradojas de Dios, podrá transmitir la vida divina a los demás. La cruz no tiene sentido ni razón de ser en el hombre, si no es a la luz y unida a la cruz de Cristo. Sólo así el dolor y la abnegación se convierten en camino necesario de santidad pues el que quiera seguir a Cristo debe negarse a sí mismo, cargar con su cruz cada día e ir en pos de Él.

“WHO AM I TO YOU?”
Lc.9,18-24: “Who do the people say I am?”
Peter’s confession of faith and Jesus’ invitation to follow him down the path of the cross defines the style that a Christian’s faith should have understood as the following of Christ and the communion with the Easter mystery. This meeting with Christ should lead us to the confession of faith:” You are the Messiah of God”.
Brothers and Sisters,
1. Jesus interrogates his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” This question is repeated to each one of us: “Who am I to you?” An interesting and great man? A just character, defender of the truth? An uncomfortable prophet? A person outside of any scheme? The apostles’ answer was swift and unrelenting You are the Christ, the Son of God living! And this response has sustained our faith for centuries. We well know that Christianity, before being a doctrine, is a person. The Christ.
2. Today’s Gospel describes the culminating experience of the apostles. It is the moment of discovery. Do we wish to deepen our knowledge and mature in His love? Let us turn to the pages of the Gospel and slowly the mystery of His person will be revealed. Thus also, it appeared to the eyes of the Apostles, an always new Christ.
When He gives sight to the blind or heals a leper, when He multiplies the loaves of bread or soothes a storm, when He resurrects Lazarus or transforms the water into blood, when He sees a heart’s intentions or when He shows indignation before the profanation of a temple, when He formulates paradoxes which He calls beatitudes or when He narrates parables like the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the lost sheep, when He transfigures in the Tabor or moans in Gethsemane or dies on the cross. Easter shall be the decisive step towards a complete understanding of His person.
3. This discovery of Christ must be personal and intransferable. Each one must walk through all the steps down the long road the apostles walked. We know that to follow Christ it is necessary to suffer and confess his name through the pain. Man’s life, inevitably, has crosses and joys. Nonetheless, Christ gives us a new vision: to die in order to live, to lose one’s life to win eternity.
Brothers and Sisters: the Christian’s first testimony and his first commitment is to accept God’s will, hence only he who has experienced God’s paradoxes shall be able to transmit divine life to others. The cross has no meaning or reason to be in man, if it is not toward the light and united to the cross of Christ. Only in this way does pain and abnegation become the necessary road to sanctity, for he who wishes to follow Christ must deny himself, carry his cross every day and go in search of Him.
