SIGNO DE CONTRADICCIÓN
Hemos venido este domingo a la escuela de Jesús y, al igual que los nazarenos del Evangelio, queremos escucharlo atentamente. Los invito a aprender la lección que hoy nos explica, que es su escala de valores; y también a realizar la tarea que hoy nos deja, que es practicar la caridad. Cristo nos envía a la calle con una misión muy especial pero antes nos alimenta con el pan de la Eucaristía.
Queridos hermanos:
1. El cristiano es un profeta. Nuestra misión consiste en transmitir la fe que hemos recibido y vivir el Evangelio que hemos celebrado en esta eucaristía. ¡Qué buen pedagogo es Cristo! No es difícil entender su mensaje: Todo se resume en el amor que consiste en servir a nuestros hermanos y acompañarlos en su camino hasta el encuentro personal y definitivo con Dios. San Pablo no se cansaba de repetirlo a los de Corinto: "Si no tienes amor, no eres más que un metal que hace ruido o unos platillos que aturden". El amor auténtico es comprensivo, servicial, que no presume, ni se engríe, ni se irrita; que disculpa sin límites, que cree, espera y aguanta sin límites, nuestro amor cristiano debe ser como el amor de Dios a la vez exigente y comprensivo.
2. A primera vista parece muy fácil cumplir este mandamiento pero, según cuenta el Evangelio, a Jesús no le fue del todo bien en Nazaret predicando esta doctrina. Sus conciudadanos se escandalizaron porque hablaba con la autoridad de un maestro, se indignaron porque ponía en duda los privilegios de Israel e intentaron matarlo porque en su pueblo no hacía los milagros que realizaba en otras partes. ¿Verdad que son muy actuales estas actitudes? Tras un entusiasmo pasajero lo rechazan y lo persiguen una vez que han visto la incomodidad de su mensaje.
La sombra de la Cruz se proyecta sobre la figura de Jesús y lo convierte en un Mesías rechazado por los suyos; actitud que irá creciendo hasta acabar llevándolo a la cruz. Sin embargo, ni aún la muerte logró acallar su voz; al cabo de veinte siglos sigue diciéndonos cada vez con más fuerza que el Reino de Dios está cerca, que debemos llevarlo a cada corazón, a cada pueblo, al mundo entero.
3. Jesús es signo de contradicción entonces y ahora ¡Cuántas veces chocamos también nosotros con el misterio de la incomprensión, de la calumnia, de la difamación! ¡Cómo percibimos hostilidad hacia nosotros por el sólo hecho de ser creyentes! Y ¿Cómo reaccionamos? Aprendamos de Cristo que acogía a todos. "El tiene su modo de actuar, dice San Ambrosio, no echa afuera al que manifiesta buena voluntad, no se resiste al que lo rechaza, ni defrauda al que le pide".
El mundo sigue necesitando profetas con palabras de fuego que lo despierten y lo revolucionen. Como testigos de Cristo tenemos que esforzarnos para que se cumpla hoy la Escritura que anuncia la buena noticia. No significa ir por allí sermoneando, ni tampoco ir diciendo a los demás lo que tienen que hacer, sino que es ir haciendo lo que Jesús nos ha mandado: "Amarnos los unos a los otros como Él nos ha amado". La buena noticia para el mundo que se ahoga en el desamor, la insolidaridad y la indiferencia, no es el lenguaje sobre el amor, sino el amor efectivo. La Eucaristía es la fiesta del amor. Celebremos el amor de Dios llevado al colmo en el sacrificio de su Hijo. Y en el amor de Dios, hagamos el compromiso de amar a nuestros hermanos.

A Sign of Contradiction
This Sunday we have come to Jesus' School and, like the Nazarenes of the Gospel, we want to listen carefully. I invite you to learn the lesson He teaches us today with His scale of values; and to hopefully act on the assigned task that He leaves us, which is to practice charity. Christ sends us out into the streets with a very special mission, but first He feeds us with the bread of the Eucharist.
Beloved:
1. The Christian is a prophet. Our mission is to spread the faith which we have received, and to live the Gospel that we have celebrated in the Eucharist. What a great Teacher Christ is! It is not difficult to understand His message: It all boils down to love - to serve our brothers and accompany them on their way to a personal and definitive encounter with God. St. Paul never got tired of repeating this to the Corinthians: "If you don't have love, then you're nothing more than a noisy metal gong or a clanging cymbal". Real love is understanding, being of service to others, it does not boast, nor is it conceited or easily irritated; it forgives without limits, believes, hopes and endures all; our Christian love must be like the love of God, both exacting and understanding.
2. At first glance it may seem quite easy to fulfill this commandment, however, according to the Gospel account, Jesus did not fare too well in Nazareth when He preached this doctrine. His fellow citizens were shocked when He spoke with the authority of a teacher; they were outraged that He questioned the privileges of Israel, so they tried to kill Him since He did not perform the miracles in His town, as He had elsewhere. Aren't these attitudes still present? After a momentary enthusiasm, many reject Him and then they persecute Him, once they see the inconvenience of His message.
The shadow of the cross is projected onto the figure of Jesus, where He becomes the Messiah rejected by his own people; an attitude that grows until it eventually leads Him to the cross. However, not even death will silence His voice; even after twenty centuries He keeps telling us - with increasing force, that the Kingdom of God is near, that we must bring this message to every heart, every town, and to the whole world.
3. Jesus is a sign of contradiction, then and now. How many times we also clash with this mystery of incomprehension, slander, defamation! How many times we perceive hostility towards ourselves, just because they are believers! And how do we react? We must learn from Christ, who welcomed everyone. "He has his own way of acting", said St. Ambrose, "He does not reject those of good will; nor does He resist those that reject Him; nor is He stingy with those that ask."
The world still needs prophets with words of fire that will awaken and revolutionize them. As witnesses of Christ, we must strive more so that Scripture is fulfilled today, in announcing the good news. We do not need to go around preaching, nor telling people what to do, but we do need to do what Jesus has commanded us: "To love one another, as He has loved us." The good news for the world that is drowning in its inhumanity, lack of solidarity and indifference - is not the language of love, but it is real love. The Eucharist is the real feast of love. We celebrate God's love which is brought to fulfillment in the sacrifice of His Son. And in the love of God, we make the promise to love our brothers.
